Home Tour: Dreamy Family Estate in Small Town North Carolina

After acquiring the cherished family home, Mary Margaret Underwood of Underwood Design embarked on a heartfelt renovation—infusing her own design sensibilities without erasing the property’s legacy. The result? A perfect fusion of historic charm and fresh personality—an entertainer’s haven thoughtfully refashioned into an even more welcoming, dynamic space.

I had the opportunity to tour the home with Concord and Charlotte-based interior designer, Mary Margaret Underwood, and can’t wait to show you around.

You may have seen the Instagram feature I shared on this home earlier this year. It’s here if you want to take a look but I’ll share more details, paint colors and sources below.

THE EXTERIOR

The exterior siding paint color isn't available but the shutters are SW Charleston Green. The front door is Fine Paints of Europe matched to the Charleston Green on the shutters. The planters flanking the front door are a beautiful non-rot planter from Eastover Collection. I love the stately boxwood anchor with mature but groomed ivy flowing off the edges. The landscape design is by Jeff Allan Landscape Architecture based out of Winston Salem. I've toured several homes he's done, including this one, and am always impressed. 

THE ENTRYWAY

The foyer is covered in a French wallpaper from Zuber called Eldorado which is a Block-Printed panoramic scenic wallpaper. It was originally in the home but after the home caught fire in the 1980's, Mary Margaret's mother had it all replaced due to damage. It was a design element Mary Margaret dare not touch when she acquired the home. The chandelier was moved from the formal living room into the entryway and anchored by her old dining room table that can expand and be additional seating for large family gatherings and parties

THE KITCHEN

The kitchen was completely redesigned and opened up to allow for more island and counter space as well as storage. The new appliances which include, a 36” SubZero Panel Ready Refrigerator and Freezer, SubZero 30” Under-counter Panel Ready Refrigerator Drawers, Cove 24” Panel Ready dishwasher, Wolf 24” Built in Coffee System, Zephyr Lux 63” White ceiling with internal blower and the jewel piece Lacanche Range, modernize the space while keeping the cabinetry seamless. The Lacanche French Stove and Oven Range is the Classique Changny 1800 style in French Blue with Brass Trim and definitely makes a statement. 

The countertops are Olympian White Danby in a honed finish with a unique twist on the kitchen island. The island had a mitered edge with a drop edge relief and custom carved profile making it just different enough to add some interest. 

The gilded iron linear pendant light over the kitchen island is from Visual Comfort and linked here. The bar stools are from Hickory Chair and upholstered in Lewis and Wood fabric. 

When I shared the home tour on Instagram, I had lots of questions about the breakfast table. It's the perfect balance of old in this new kitchen! It's a custom yew banded oval racetrack trestle table from Englishman’s Fine Furnishings. 

THE FORMAL LIVING SPACE

The large formal living room is filled with a mix of antiques and more contemporary pieces. The walls included! The artwork throughout the home was extensive and an incredible mix of antique and contemporary collected through travel, local galleries and passed down from family members. The oversized brown and blue rug anchored the room and helped to warm the traditional space. This one was sourced through Charlotte Rug Gallery. The room is painted in Farrow and Ball Pointing on the walls and Farrow and Ball Skylight on ceiling. 

THE CASUAL LIVING SPACES

Possibly my favorite room in the home was this blue drenched sitting room with warm brown tones and layers of inviting reds. The cozy space was a welcomed change from the large, more formal spaces that led to it. With bookshelves covered in family memoriabilia and meaningful artwork, this room is one of the most used by the family. It's painted in Farrow & Ball Light Blue.

The additional casual living space is off the family bar and is perfectly furnished with four oversized leather chairs anchored by a custom ottoman game table. The natural light pouring into the room and sightline to the hydrangea filled landscape, make it a perfect morning coffee spot. 

THE DINING ROOM

The dining room is home to many of the family portraits and the original chandelier. It hosts a large antique claw foot dining table and has been recently updated with upholstered walls and a lacquered ceiling to add interest without taking away from its traditional design. 

THE BAR

The family bar is one of the most unique rooms I have seen in a home! It's a recent addition to allow for an indoor gathering space right off the pool and veranda. While it's all new, it looks and feels like it's always been a part of the house. Behind the smoky antique mirror is the television beautifully disguised and serves as a reflection of the rooms colorful and unique artwork. The tile floors allow for wet feet to enter the home to grab a snack or drink before heading back outside to the pool and veranda. It also allows Mary Margaret to entertain without everyone congregating in the kitchen. The bar is complete with beer on tap, a cooling fridge, dishwasher and wine cooler. 

THE POOLSIDE BATHROOM

The full bathroom off the bar is intended to give guests a place to shower off, change and use the restroom without having to come through the house. The fun bathroom floor tile is called Modulo Quadro Nero/ Sky and purchased at Renaissance Tile & Bath. 

BONUS CONTENT!

The back hall stairs are filled with more family photos and portraits as well as a more modern gold geometric wallpaper. The antelope stair running and stairwell lighting added a rich design element to the space. The entire home was filled with framed newspaper clippings and old store receipts from the family business dating back to Mary Margaret's great grandfather. It was truly an honor to walk the halls and explore the charm of this stately Concord, NC home that has been in the family for generations.

A Fresh Take on Tradition: Touring a Timeless Myers Park Home by Becky Nielsen Interiors

Tucked into the tree-lined streets of Charlotte’s charming Myers Park, this recently renovated residence is a stunning example of how fresh style can harmoniously blend with timeless tradition. Designed by Nashville and LA-based Becky Nielsen Interiors, the home beautifully reflects the designer’s ability to marry elegance, functionality, and warmth in every space.

From the moment you step inside, the home’s character unfolds gracefully. The living room sets a feminine, inviting tone with soft pinks, delicate chinoiserie, and layers of texture that speak to both comfort and sophistication. Just off the entry, the dining room stuns with its classic blue and white wallpaper, traditional crystal chandelier, and exquisitely tailored drapes that frame views of the charming front porch—a favorite perch for neighborhood hellos.

The heart of the home is the expansive kitchen, designed with both family life and entertaining in mind. Two large islands offer plenty of prep and gathering space, while the main sink, thoughtfully positioned beneath a window, overlooks the side yard. A casual dining table and cozy keeping room complete the space, creating a warm, functional hub where everyone wants to linger. The kitchen cabinets are painted in a beautiful Farrow & Ball Wimborne White. 

A step down leads to a spacious living room with soaring coffered ceilings, built-in bookcases, and a striking fireplace topped with a marshland painting. Red and white textiles bring the space to life, adding bold character against the classic backdrop.

Tucked away downstairs is a rich, moody den saturated in blue tones, along with a jewel box half bath that channels Americana flair—an intentional contrast to the otherwise soft, neutral palette of the home.

Upstairs, the charm continues. Two little boys’ bedrooms, connected by a cheerful Jack-and-Jill bathroom, feel like something from a storybook. Each room is layered with playful wallpaper, tailored fabrics, and youthful art that feel both curated and cozy. 

The primary suite is a calming retreat, cloaked in pale blue wallpaper with a spacious en suite that rivals a luxury hotel: double vanities, a soaking tub, a generous steam shower, and serene gray and white tile throughout.

Outside, the large wraparound porch invites morning coffee and evening chats with neighbors in this walkable, welcoming community.

After years of thoughtful renovations and design work, this home is now the joyful residence of a young Charlotte family. Thanks to Becky Nielsen’s timeless vision, it’s a home that not only honors tradition but feels completely fresh—tailored for everyday beauty and lifelong memories. HOME DECOR INSPIRED BY THE TOUR

How to Design a Classic Boys Bedroom

When we moved into our home late 2022, I was 38 weeks pregnant with my third and eager to move in before the baby arrived. That meant, waiting on some projects I knew I wanted to do. Including decorating my oldest child's bedroom! A few years later and I finally gave my sweet oldest, Perry, a proper big boy room. Here's my advice when decorating a kid's bedroom to ensure it will grow with them for years to come!

1. Picking a color scheme / style

If you're anything like me, you have a Pinterest board or assortment of Instagram images saved to "Kids Bedroom." Maybe it's just me. But I used those images to settle on a style for his room.

For years, I have been saving down Americana themed boy rooms so I knew going with that color scheme would be a tried and true design for me. I wanted a tattersall  style rug to give the room a playful, soft base, and I landed on this Tori Rug from Stanton Carpet. From there, I built the rest of the room.

2. Invest in some, save on others

I'm big on finding pieces that will last and stand the test of time that are worth investing in. Then layering in pieces that I already own or that I find at antique shops or off Facebook marketplace.

For this room, the rug and the headboard are investment pieces that anchor the room. The headboard, custom designed with Coley Home, was an important piece of the design puzzle for me. Since Perry's room already had plantation shutters, I didn't plan on doing other window treatments. I knew I wanted to bring color and warmth in with upholstered headboards. 

3. Remember, they will be kids

I love good design but I'm also a realistic mom of 3 kids under 6. Things get messy.

I didn't go over the top with wallpaper or expensive bedding or even a new bedside table. Instead, I painted the walls in a flat Sherwin-Williams Nonchalant White making it easy to touchup, selected cute and affordable bedding and found an antique, distressed dresser to place in between the two twin beds since I knew it would be covered in Legos and Hot Wheels.

The lamp and lampshade are from Ballard and the white dresser is a Pottery Barn Kids classic that I've had for years. It's still available online. I get asked a lot of about the mirror, too! I have several mirrors from Winstons Collection, including this pretty navy one in Perry's room.

1. Staples to Dress the Table in Every Season

A well-set table sets the mood for any gathering. Keep a few timeless essentials on hand—neutral linen napkins, classic versatile plates (use code GARDENANDGRACE15! for 15% off mine!), and simple flatware. In spring, add fresh touches like a floral centerpiece, pastel-colored lighting, or woven placemats for a light and airy feel.

2. Easy Ways to Effortless Hosting

The secret to stress-free entertaining? Prep ahead and keep things simple. Have a folding table (or two), folding chairs (I love these bamboo chairs) on-hand, and a space in mind that flows nicely from the kitchen or grill. Choose dishes that can be made in advance, set up a self-serve drink station, and don’t be afraid to mix store-bought items with homemade touches. Guests appreciate a relaxed host far more than a perfect party.

I keep the florals as simple as possible but never go without them. Here I did yellow tulips clustered in the center with fluffy hydrangeas around the edges in a wicker urn (linking it here). It’s so easy!

3. No-Fuss Dresses to Entertain in Style

Comfortable and chic is the way to go. A breezy midi dress, a lightweight wrap dress, or a flowy maxi in cheerful spring hues will keep you looking polished without effort. Bonus points for machine-washable fabrics—because spills happen!

Favorite Low-Stress Recipes for a Crowd

Nothing makes hosting easier than a menu of crowd-pleasing, low-maintenance dishes. My go-to favorites include deviled eggs (always a hit!), classic pasta salad, warm blueberry cobbler, and juicy all-American hamburgers fresh off the grill.

Grilling not only fills the air with a welcoming aroma but also creates the perfect moment for the men to gather, chat, and enjoy a drink before sitting down to eat. These dishes can be prepped ahead or come together quickly, so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying your guests.

With these simple tips, spring entertaining can be as easy as it is enjoyable.

Personal Update: Life Lately!

Hello, friends! It’s been a little while since I’ve shared a personal update, so I thought I’d take this time to fill you in on what’s been going on in my world—both personally and professionally. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, and let’s catch up!

Leaving corporate life

In October, I made one of the biggest changes of my life: I left my corporate job. It was a decision that felt equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, but ultimately, I knew it was the right one. Stepping away from the structured, demanding nature of corporate work has brought, in a lot of ways, peace of mind and re-discovery.

Now, I’m fully focused on Garden & Grace, my labor of love. Pouring my energy into this passion project full-time has been incredibly rewarding, but it’s also come with its own challenges. Every day, I’m learning, evolving, and figuring out how to balance creativity and business. The freedom to shape my own schedule and dedicate myself to something I love doing has been worth every ounce of effort.

Life without a nanny

Another big shift in our lives has been adjusting to life without a nanny. Let me tell you, it’s been an adventure! While juggling work and motherhood can feel challenging sometimes, I’ve cherished this extra time with my kids. They are growing so fast, and I’m constantly amazed by how much each of them are learning and changing every day. Finding moments of stillness and gratitude amidst the chaos has been my secret weapon.

Travel highlights: high-point market, charleston, Dallas

In the past few months, I’ve been fortunate to sneak in a couple of trips that blended work and pleasure. High Point Market was an absolute dream—so much inspiration under one roof! I was selected to be one of 10 influencers for the Design Influencers Tour through High Point Market Authority which was such an honor. I left with a notebook full of ideas and a heart brimming with excitement for the possibilities ahead.

Charleston, on the other hand, was a mix of work and play. That city has a way of charming you with its cobblestone streets, historic charm, and vibrant food scene. Whether I am scouting for design inspiration or enjoying a leisurely stroll South of Broad, I always leave with my cup filled.

Most recently, I traveled to Dallas for a dear friend’s wedding. It was such a joy to celebrate her and reconnect with old friends. While there, I couldn’t resist exploring the city’s stunning architecture, especially in Highland Park. I also enjoyed a delightful lunch at Honor Bar—definitely a spot I’d recommend if you find yourself in Dallas!

Celebrating Milestones: My son turning two and hosting Christmas

Speaking of memorable moments, my little one recently turned two! It’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown. This milestone was a beautiful reminder to celebrate the small joys and savor the simple, precious moments of life.

We also hosted Christmas at our house for the first time this year, in our newly decorated dining room. It was such a special occasion, made even more meaningful by using my great-grandmother’s Wedgwood china. Having family gathered around the table, sharing stories and laughter, made the holiday unforgettable.

My husband and I also had a festive night out at the Christmas ball, which was such a magical way to celebrate the season together.

Home Updates: New Lamps and Decor

As always, my home has been a canvas for creativity. I’ve added a few new pieces to our space recently, and they’ve completely transformed it. From statement lamps that bring warmth to a room to decor accents that feel like tiny pieces of art, it’s been fun to keep adding layers and see the room take shape. Here it is all dressed up for Christmas, my new lamps debut!

Life these days feels full—of challenges, beauty, and growth. Stepping into this new chapter hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been deeply fulfilling. I’m grateful for every twist and turn, and I’m so glad to have this space to share it with all of you.

Transforming My Primary Bathroom: A Timeless Renovation

Renovating my primary bathroom was an exciting and transformative project. The space was outdated and poorly ventilated, so we decided to take it down to the studs and start fresh. Here’s how we turned it into a timeless retreat.

The Before

Before the renovation, the bathroom was dark and outdated. There was only one sink awkwardly positioned by the window, which made the layout feel unbalanced. The shower was cramped and poorly lit, with grout that hadn’t been maintained over the years. Additionally, the washer and dryer were located in the bathroom, taking up valuable space and contributing to the overall lack of functionality. To address this, we moved the laundry appliances to a newly created laundry room in the upstairs hallway, freeing up the bathroom for a more efficient layout.

Expanding the Space

The first major decision was to move a wall back 15 inches into the adjacent room. During the process, we discovered that the floor joists were sagging, so we ended up replacing them entirely. This required removing the ceiling in the foyer beneath the bathroom. Once the joists were replaced, we had the ceiling drywall redone and repainted, ensuring everything looked seamless.

This small adjustment made a huge difference, giving us enough room to add a water closet for the toilet and a double vanity. With the new layout in place, the design could truly shine.

Timeless Design Choices

I wanted a bathroom that would feel classic and elegant for years to come. Here are the design elements that brought that vision to life:

1. Marble Everywhere: Marble countertops, floors, and shower tiles created a cohesive and luxurious look.

2. Ogee Edges: The ogee edges on the countertops added a touch of sophistication.

3. Molding Details: Crown molding and pencil molding enhanced the architectural details, while tile molding inside the shower tied everything together.

4. Inset Cabinets: A custom vanity with inset cabinets provided a clean, tailored appearance.

5. Framed Mirror: A framed mirror complemented the overall design and added warmth.

6. Polished Nickel Fixtures: Plumbing fixtures in polished nickel by Newport Brass brought timeless elegance to the space.

7. Floor Tile Border: To elevate the marble floors, I added a border by cutting larger shower tiles into long, narrow pieces.

Choosing Quality Materials and Vendors

Sourcing high-quality materials and working with trusted vendors were key to achieving the final look:

• Standalone Tub: Sourced from Ferguson, it became a beautiful focal point. Here's a link to mine.

• Marble Tile: Purchased from Floor and Decor, the marble added a timeless elegance.

• Marble Countertop: Sourced from Stone Basyx and fabricated by Carolina Stone & Marble. The marble color is Shadow Storm, the same we have in our kitchen and butler's pantry.

• Custom Vanity: Created by a Charlotte-based cabinet maker, the vanity perfectly fit our space and style.

• Plumbing Fixtures: We chose polished nickel fixtures by Newport Brass from Majestic Bath, also available at Ferguson. Here's a link to the collection I used.

• Paint: Walls painted with Benjamin Moore paint, purchased locally from Blackhawk Ace Hardware in Charlotte.

The Timeline

From start to finish, the renovation took about two months.

Tip! Select your plumbing fixtures, including the bathtub, prior to starting construction as some may have a longer lead time. After looking at shower and floor tile at many of the local tile shops, I ended up getting mine at Floor & Decor for two reasons: it was in stock, and I could hand-select the marble pieces for the shower and floor. Since marble is a natural stone, there's a lot of variation even within the same style and I didn't want to take the risk. I LOVE how it turned out. The color is Carrara Chateau. The only pieces that required a special order were the base molding which took about 5-7 days to arrive.

For the countertop, the vanity must be installed before they can template and fabricate (i.e., cut) the countertop. It's typically 1 week for them to come out and measure and another week, on average, for it to be fabricated and installed.  

Despite the challenges of completely gutting the space and coordinating with various contractors, the timeline was well worth it for the result.

The Final Result

The newly renovated bathroom feels spacious, bright, and timeless. Every design element and material was carefully chosen to create a harmonious and elegant retreat that we’ll enjoy for years to come. This renovation taught me that thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship make all the difference.

A Design Lover's Guide to Charleston

My husband and I were lucky enough to sneak off to Charleston for a quick getaway a few weeks ago! Child-free quality time in one of our favorite places before the rush of the holidays was such a treat. I shared a few of these recs on Instagram, but wanted to give them a more permanent spot on the blog, just in case it’s helpful for your planning!

WHERE WE ATE

With so many incredible places to eat, it can be hard to pick. But we have some go-to spots we almost never miss and even tried a few new places! Here’s what we ended up doing. 

Lunch: Lewis Barbecue

If you like BBQ, you need to add this spot to your list! They serve Central Texas-style, which is known for its dry-rub meats. Must try: green chile corn pudding.

Pre-dinner drinks: Post House Inn

A restaurant in a charming home, nestled in a charming waterfront neighborhood? Sign me up! We just stopped in for drinks this time, but the brunch is worth adding to your list. Post House isn’t technically in Charleston, but it's worth the quick (and scenic!) drive into Mount Pleasant. 

Dinner: Costa Cuisine

This spot is relatively new and is quickly climbing to the top of my must-try list! They specialize in Coastal-Italian, so think of bright, fresh flavors. I would start with the scallop crudo and burrata and split the pasta special for your main. 

Dessert: We ended our food tour with dessert at the Thoroughbred Club at The Charleston Place. You could also do late-night cake from Carmella's Café & Dessert Bar. 

Breakfast: It has to be Miller’s All Day, one of the most-recommended places from y’all. The atmosphere and food were a great way to end our quick trip!

WHERE TO SHOP

Charleston has so many wonderful businesses. Here are a few I recommend:

• Elizabeth Stuart: I’ll never miss this well-curated home store with antique and giftable goods when I’m in CHS.

• Lake Pajamas: Some of my favorite pajamas for me and the kids! The fabric is SO soft. 

• Salisbury and Manus: Another great home store with elegant finds.

• M Dumas and Sons: A stylish men’s clothing store that opened in 1917!

• Juliska: One of my go-to spots for all my tabletop needs.

• Buru: They have some really unique women’s clothing, made in small batches.
• George C Birlant & Co.: A high-quality antique store right in King Street.

WHERE TO STAY

This trip we stayed at The Charleston Place, which was so wonderful. I really loved the complimentary cruiser bikes — such a charming perk and one of the best ways to see the city! I’ve also stayed at Hotel Bennett, which is another fabulous option with a cute champagne bar.

This Magazine-Worthy Atlanta Family Home Stuns with its Flawless Transformation

It’s hard to believe this large family home — with good bones and the perfect location — was once a dated 1970s single-story ranch. New! Scroll to see before interior and exterior images provided by the builder, New River Building Co.

The Atlanta-area homeowners hired a formidable design team, including C. Brandon Ingram, Ashley Gilbreath Interior Design and New River Building Co., to rise to the occasion. They completed a truly stunning transformation — so good it was featured in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles in 2020.

Today’s mini tour starts with the curb appeal! I appreciate how the homeowners went with a traditional brick exterior. You’d never know the second story is a recent addition, thanks to careful craftsmanship and the owner's discerning style.

The ceilings on the first floor were raised from eight to 10 feet as part of the remodel. I love how open the foyer feels, especially with all the character crafted by thick moldings and arched doorways.

The peach tones, neutrals and soothing blue-greens are carried throughout, which makes the house feel cohesive, comfortable and elegant.

I think having antiques is important for any home, but especially if you want a remodel or new build to feel more storied. This home is a picture-picture example of that. Even the brass pulls and knobs seem to have a little patina, adding to that lived-in but graceful look!

The kitchen and dining room are some of my favorite rooms in the house! All of the details in the dining room are perfection to me, including the Chaddock Furniture dining chairs, Zoe Design wallpaper mural and Iatesta Studio chandelier.

Last but never least, you can’t forget your four-legged friends when redesigning a home! The crate built into the laundry room is so clever — and the sweet pup looks so happy with their new “room.”

See Inside a Classic Charleston Home Transformed with Neutrals

This Charleston home stuns with its never-boring neutral color palette. I’m struck by the balance of formal and laidback Southern style that the home embodies. It’s a true representation of the city that built it, thanks to the brilliance of interior designer Melissa Ervin and architect Beau Clowney.

It all starts with the double porch ceilings painted haint blue—it doesn’t get more Charleston than this!

As soon as you step inside, the magic continues. I can’t stop looking at photos of this foyer, wrapped in Gracie Studio wallpaper. I love how the chinoiserie design makes the space feel traditional, while the neutral tone keeps the space grounded.

The kitchen and formal dining room are just off the foyer, where the theme of elegant neutrals continues! You can imagine intimate dinner parties and family gatherings around that round dining table. Plus, who wouldn’t want to cook in a kitchen like this! The millwork on the ceiling brings in a coastal feel.

The primary suite looks like a calming oasis, punctuated with a pretty antique-looking chandelier. The other bedrooms shown also take a monochromatic approach. Dressing a room in one color palette creates an understated elegance.

Last but certainly not least is one of my favorite rooms in the house: the office! It’s such a clever use of space, filled with natural light and style. I really like how the glass partition walls allow the space to feel like a continuation of the landing and hallways. Plus, being able to close the door is essential for privacy while working.

7 Timeless Wallpaper Ideas from Homes We’ve Toured

Wallpaper is one of my favorite ways to dress up a space—it’s like wrapping an entire room in art! There are so many options out there, I wanted to highlight examples of tasteful applications.  Follow me!

This home hit the Charlotte market this earlier year, and is one of my favorite listing features to date! Interior designer Anne Pearson, who I’ve also worked with in my personal home, made magic. Interior designer Kate Figler graciously welcomed us into her 1945 Nashville home this summer for a picture-perfect tour. You’re immediately greeted by an iconic entryway, painted in Benjamin Moore Tissue Pink 1163. You can catch a peek of her powder room, just under the curved staircase — a sign of all the fun to come!

10 Photos for Classic Christmas Curb Appeal Inspiration

Walking through town looking at beautiful homes is always one of my favorite things to do. This time of year makes it even more special with enchanting light displays, wreaths and ribbons galore! Here are a few of the stoops that stopped me. 

A pair of topiaries will always be timeless to me. I love the understated elegance of dressing up decor you already have.  

My faux topiaries, which are around $220 for the set on Amazon, have lasted me years! Just add ribbon, like this peacock blue velvet option from Fig & Dove, for that festive flare. 

This home says joy to me! The warm glow from within evokes such a cozy feeling, and the lit magnolia garland creates an elegant entrance. The front door makes such an impression, you don't realize how simple the decor really is!

Garland and wreaths are hallmarks of classic Christmas decor. For a similar look, I like this cherry red velvet ribbon and this lit faux wreath from Ballard. 

Net lights are genius, especially if you want to extend your Christmas decor beyond your front door. No room-climbing necessary here!

A simple wreath brings the simplest holiday cheer. You can't go wrong with this classic look in my book. 

Wreaths on windows with red bows and a lit garland framing the front door make this home holiday ready. The symmetry is so pretty. 

This all-green look works so well with the home's ivy-covered facade and shutters. If you like how this whimsical garland drips, look for Norfolk pine or cedar. 

Lamps, giant baubles, lights, wreaths and a garland work together to create just the right amount of holiday cheer! 

I thought the placement of these wreaths was really pretty. It's slightly different than the on-the-window approach, but I like how it creates a triangle with the wreath on the front door. Plus, I always stop for a Christmas tree sparkling in the window. 

This arched entrance looks made for garland! Another understated look proves classic Christmas decor is all in the details.

4 Inspiring Home Tours from 2024 — Plus Perfect Paint Colors

‍This year we were so lucky to take a peek inside some of the most stunning homes across the South. Whether we were able to stop by in person or admire from afar, I’m feeling so inspired looking back on our year. 

As I’ve continued to get to know my wonderful audience, one thing is clear: y’all love pretty homes and specific paint colors! It’s one of my top requests. So today I thought I’d reshare some of our favorite homes and paint colors used in them. (Hint: Next week we’ll focus on wallpaper!)

This Isle of Hope estate was so inspiring we created one blog post for the exterior and one for the interior! The curb appeal is so idyllic and I love the pop of color the front door provides. It’s in a gorgeous blackened teal blue.

Refresh Your Dining Room and Tabletop for Christmas With These Finds

One of the best things about this time of year is the opportunity to gather around the table with friends and family, from intimate dinner parties to larger fetes. I've been getting my dining room ready for all things holiday hosting — along with our other living spaces — and it's bringing me so much joy.

Next on my list is mapping out our holiday tablescape so for today's post I wanted to share a few ideas for refreshing your dining room.

In lieu of wallpapering an entire dining room, I opted for a pair of House of Harris panels from Society Social - currently 20% off with code EVERYTHING20. The scale makes a dramatic impact on the space for a fraction of the cost! Plus, I love how I can move these around the room or into a different space entirely if I ever want to.

Florals and candles

Kate Morrison's Concord home is the definition of timeless beauty. I find myself going back to that home tour for inspiration over and over. I love how she decorated her table with classic candles and a stunning floral arrangement. 

If you want something that will last longer than the holiday season, I'm a big fan of preserved florals and Botanica in Charlotte has a wide variety. They also sell at Scott's Antiques in Atlanta. The orchids on my buffet table in the first image are from there.

Taper candles never go out of style and can make a great gift with a set of acrylic or crystal holders. I love the lacquered twist or Lily of the Valley options for a slight twist on a classic.

I'm stilling pinching myself that I had the opportunity to team up with Tuckernuck for a home tour earlier this year. The tablescape, pulled together with homeowner and Nashville-based interior designer Kate Figler, was a more autumnal theme, but the formula can be applied to any dining room setup! You'll notice fun tassel napkin rings, a floral tablecloth and beautiful China plates. 

I don't often replace my holiday hero pieces, like like China or silverware, but I love the idea of surprising guests with fresh, festive name card holders or napkin rings. These would make a great host gift, too. 

And we can't forget about Megan Daisy Milner's dining room table. Her abstract artwork and traditional interiors had us all saving images for inspiration. My full home tour with Megan can be found on YouTube and so many great sources from her home are on the blog.

Timeless in Charlotte! This traditional home exudes southern elegance. I love the grasscloth wallcovering and robin egg blue cornices and panels.

A Design-Enthusiast’s Journey to an Elegant, Family-Friendly Living Space

‍ ‍As we move into the holiday and a cozier time of year, I’m feeling so grateful for my home. In the last couple of weeks I’ve talked about how I’m decorating this year, quick Christmas prep tips and my love for Fig & Dove, so today I wanted to give you a closer look at my living spaces.

I worked with Anne Pearson to pull together the living and dining room and am so happy with how it turned out! I wanted these rooms to feel unique, grounded and formal but still comfortable enough for our family to enjoy. Let’s step into my home!

LIVING ROOM

In terms of furniture for our living room, I wanted to design something that’s both timeless and cozy. These sofas are a collaboration between Lester Furniture and Cambridge Row, and totally embraced my vision. I also think mixing in antiques helps foster that timeless feeling in a space. My brown antique chest is from Canterbury Antiques in Nashville. After a lot of samples, I landed on Creamy by Sherwin Williams in an eggshell finish and Loggia by Sherwin Williams in a semi-gloss finish on the trim and fireplace. It's a warm, formal look that pairs so well with my blue-green silk drapes and neutral rug.  

DINING ROOM

The dining room has become one of my favorite rooms in the house. I especially love the subtle pop of color we did on the ceiling. It’s Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball in full gloss.  

I’ve said it before, but antiques are a must in every room for achieving a traditional style. In this space, the dining room chairs are from The KS Collection, a wonderful antique store in Nashville. The dining room table was a result of a long-time search on Facebook Marketplace! Hint: search for "double pedestal mahogany dining table." It includes an extension and table pad, and I only paid $800. Besides one minor scratch it's in great condition. Definitely a favorite second hand find!

The lamps are from Visual Comfort and so is my chandelier! It's easily, one of my all-time favorite lighting brands and is constantly adding new pieces to their collection. Finally, I polished off the space with orchids from Botanica. If you’re in Charlotte you have to stop in (thankfully, you can shop online and at Scott's Market in Atlanta, too). Their flowers are real, but preserved, so they last for about five years!

CONVERSATION ROOM

I’ve given you a tour of my conversation room before, so I wanted to share a few more sources! There are so many details I love in this room. The club chairs, which I love sinking into with my morning coffee, are from Wesley Hall. I have a couple of pieces from Poppy’s of Macon including the burlwood waterfall coffee table and the chest! I worked with Laurin White of Cambridge Row to pull together my vision for this space. It's better than I could have dreamt. Oh! and the federal bullseye mirror was also a Facebook Marketplace find that Laurin told me to immediately grab when she saw the picture of it. I paid under $300, a fraction of the price in most retail shops.

The rug in this room is so special to me. It’s from English Village Lane and the topiary details along the border make me so happy. It’s also incredibly durable and easy to clean, a non-negotiable in a house full of kids and pets!

The window treatments in my conversation room really pull the space together. The cornice boards, which are in Thibaut Williamson fabric, help the room feel buttoned up while the Schumacher brown check drapes add some whimsy — a perfect balance!

See How I Got My Home Holiday Ready With Fig & Dove

This holiday season I had the total joy of working with Fig & Dove to get my home holiday ready. Interior designer Colleen Waguespack started Fig & Dove because, as a designer, she couldn't find holiday decor that complemented her clients' elevated interiors. Her pieces are meant to seamlessly blend with your personal home, and everything at Fig & Dove works together. I love how you can get one or two pieces a year and build a cohesive collection of timeless decor that you'll treasure forever.

I'm going to walk you through my living, dining and conversation rooms. Let the Christmas cheer begin!

LIVING ROOM

Let's start this holiday home tour in my living room! I just love the way our tree looks by the fireplace, especially with those gorgeous Fig & Dove stockings! The stocking holders are totally genius — they're very kid-friendly which is a must in our house. You can dress up your stockings even more by adding a bauble tassel. I went with the ombre gold option. I also love the idea of putting these on dresser knobs in a guest room so your guests get a dose of holiday cheer, too. 

I use a lot of blues, greens and browns in my home, so I really appreciate how these ornaments work with the existing space rather than compete or stand out too much. The double glass ball ornament is so pretty and adds some unique dimension among the other ball ornaments. The gilded doves are so special but not fragile — again, a must with three little kids and a dog running around!

The classic look is polished off with a tree skirt, also from Fig & Dove. It's definitely an investment but it really pulls the scheme together and I know I'll use it forever.

I couldn't take my eyes off the dining room during this photoshoot. I'm so proud of this space and a few Fig & Dove pieces really made it shine. The gold decorative angel doubles as a tree topper, but I really liked having it on the table to help carry some elements from my living room into the space. 

One of my favorite holiday decor tricks is to hang a wreath on mirrors. All you need to do is give this Fig & Dove boxwood wreath a quick fluff and then voila! It's tied with a sash — one of Fig & Dove's calling cards! They have so many options to choose from. If you're someone who likes to keep a wreath up all year, you can just switch out the sash depending on the holiday.

Last but not at all least, is my conversation room. I was seriously impressed with the Fig & Dove gold magnolia garland we used in this room.

I find live garland to be pricey—considering you have to toss it every year—and have been on the hunt for a good faux option. I haven't found something with as much depth and texture as this one. It was super easy to lay across the mantle, too. It's an investment piece but something you'll admire for a long, long time. We jazzed it up with a few small stockings and flameless candles.
