The secret to good design

I walked into this Charlotte home and immediately wished I could bottle the feeling. It was the little bit of sunshine and cheer we’ve all been looking for this winter.

The charming Charlotte home — with character and designer finishes — will leave you dreaming and energized. Every wall, every corner, every detail — intentionally finished. While I toured this home in-person, it was hard to capture it all in an Instagram Reel

So I partnered with the realtor, Meredith Tomascak, and interior designer, Anne Pearson, to bring you beautiful images that I think you’ll love.

Anne has graciously provided paint colors and other sources which I share below. I’ve also asked her to share some advice for homeowners aspiring to create a home that feels finished and personalized.

If you find it helpful, please share with a friend and subscribe for even more like this.

Now, sit back and enjoy the tour.

The Paint | sherwin williams clary sage (railings and front door)

You have beautiful artwork. Where are some of your favorite places to source art?

Anne: I purchase a lot through artists I follow on Instagram: Caleb Mahoney, Renee Bouchon, Laura McCarty, Alexis Walters, Catherine B Jones. I also have been bidding on antique paintings on live auction like the one in the laundry room. I had that one reframed.

The Advice (from Anne) | I really focused on buying smaller pieces that I love and then put some money into the framing. It takes time to develop a collection. Decorating slowly is not a bad thing!! Take your time and get the bones of your house right first then work on adding all the layers.

Anne’s home has evolved over the last six years. She truly has lived into her advice to take your time and find the things you love.

For example, here is the entry way during the process of decorating.

Now!!

Your home feels so collected and layered. Where do you look and what do you look for when thinking about accessories?

Anne: I scour Etsy and consignment stores for accessories like old books and turnbridge boxes and my little collection of marble fruits. All of these together add so much warmth and character to a home.

The Wallpaper | quadrille arbre de matisse camel on tint

The Paint | sherwin williams clary sage (same as railings and front door)

The Paint | extra white by sherwin williams, tricorn black by sherwin williams

What advice would you give a homeowner just starting out decorating their home?

The Advice (from Anne): I will have to heed my own advice with our new/old house as it will not be done in a day a week or even a year. Good design takes time.

Roof Types and Materials That Elevate Your Home’s Curb Appeal

A roof does so much more than keep the rain out—it’s often the first thing that catches your eye, the detail that sets the tone for the entire home.

A roof does so much more than keep the rain out—it’s often the first thing that catches your eye, the detail that sets the tone for the entire home. Over the years, I’ve noticed certain roofs that make a front facade truly sing, whether through texture, color, or just the way they complement the architecture. Here are some thoughts on slate, cedar and metal roofs!

‍ ‍The Established Feel of Slate

Slate has a way of commanding attention without ever feeling flashy. Its natural texture and rich color give a home a sense of elegance and permanence. The weight and cost aren’t for every home, but when it works, it’s unforgettable.‍ ‍

The Charm of Cedar Shakes

Cedar feels softer, more organic. There’s something about its warm tones and how it weathers over time that makes a home feel lived-in and loved. It adds a natural, approachable beauty that suits traditional, coastal, and cottage-style homes alike.

The Quiet Statement of Metal

Metal roofs have quietly become a favorite of mine. Lightweight, durable, and long-lasting, they’re a practical choice that can also make a design statement. I especially love using metal for additions or standalone structures like garages—it pairs beautifully with the main home while standing up to the elements with minimal maintenance.

 The Durability of Clay

Clay tiles bring a completely different kind of character. Their warm, earthy colors and sculptural forms make a home feel distinctive. Clay is durable and long-lasting, and it’s a nice way to introduce color and an unexpected design element.

‍ ‍Faux and composite shingles have become increasingly common, offering the appearance of slate or cedar without the same weight or cost. For some homes, they may make sense—but they also raise an interesting question about how closely materials can mimic the real thing and whether it's a good alternative to asphalt roof shingles. What do you think? Hear what others are saying and share your own thoughts here.

At the end of the day, the right roof is about more than materials—it’s about character, proportion, and how it makes a house feel like home. The roofs that have caught my eye over the years aren’t just practical; they make a statement, invite a second look, and tie everything together.

4 Kitchen Design Details That Make a Big Impact

If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, building a new home, or simply gathering inspiration for the future, the smallest details often make the biggest difference. Thoughtful design choices can elevate your kitchen from “nice” to truly custom — without always adding major cost. Here are five designer-approved kitchen ideas to consider as you plan your space.

1. Add a Small Scullery or Working Kitchen

Even the smallest scullery can transform how your kitchen functions. This extra space is perfect for a second dishwasher, sink, and additional storage — ideal for keeping the main kitchen clean during busy weeknights or gatherings. It’s also the perfect spot for a small refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, and other appliances you’d rather not keep on display. Think of it as your behind-the-scenes powerhouse.

‍ ‍‍ ‍2. Carry Your Countertop Up the Wall

Continuing your countertop material as the backsplash creates a seamless, elevated look that works beautifully in both traditional and modern kitchens. This uninterrupted line of stone or quartz draws the eye upward and adds subtle drama. It’s especially impactful behind the range, where you can frame the area with a custom detail or unique stone veining.

3. Choose Ogee Edges for a Timeless Touch

Countertop edges are often overlooked, but they can change the entire feel of your kitchen. An ogee edge adds softness and timeless character—and it’s often not much more expensive than a standard profile. Pro tip: If you’re working within a tighter budget, consider using the ogee edge only on the kitchen island. It still makes a statement while keeping costs in check.

4. Place a Window Over the Sink

If your layout allows, positioning the sink under a window brings instant charm. A window that cranks open feels classic and practical, inviting fresh air in while you prep meals or wash dishes. And if it faces your backyard or garden — even better. It turns an everyday task into an enjoyable moment.

Non-white Paint Colors That Add Character

If you’re looking for paint colors that bring personality to a space without feeling bold or overwhelming, these three favorites are worth considering.

If you’re looking for paint colors that bring personality to a space without feeling bold or overwhelming, these three favorites are worth considering.

‍ ‍Woodlawn Blue by Benjamin Moore
In a two-story foyer with semi-good natural light, this soft blue feels fresh, inviting, and perfectly southern. It’s light enough to keep the space open, yet adds just the right amount of color. I especially love how it looks paired with creamy white molding—it highlights the architecture and gives the entryway a timeless charm. See the full home tour with Kate Morrison from Eastover Collection here

Light Blue by Farrow & Ball
This cozy den proves that soft color can still feel rich and layered. Farrow & Ball’s Light Blue creates a soothing backdrop that plays beautifully with warmer tones—think browns, reds, and deep blues. It adds depth and character to smaller rooms, making them feel intimate rather than dark. See my full home tour with Mary Margaret Underwood here.

Tissue Pink by Benjamin Moore
In another entryway, Tissue Pink offers the faintest blush of color. I didn’t even notice it was pink until I looked back at photos—it’s that subtle. This hue adds a gentle, feminine touch without feeling too sweet, and pairs effortlessly with greens, blues, and creamy neutrals. See my home tour with Kate Figler at her Nashville, TN home here

How to Design a Classic Boys Bedroom

When we moved into our home in late 2022, I was 38 weeks pregnant and had to press pause on decorating my oldest son’s room. A few years (and plenty of Pinterest saves) later, I finally created a space that feels both playful and timeless—with an Americana theme, smart mix of high and low pieces, and kid-friendly practicality. In the blog, I’m sharing my favorite tips for designing a child’s room that grows with them, stays stylish, and can handle the real-life messes. Whether you're starting from scratch or refreshing a space, this post is full of inspiration and real-mom advice. Come take a peek inside Perry’s new big boy room!

When we moved into our home late 2022, I was 38 weeks pregnant with my third and eager to move in before the baby arrived. That meant, waiting on some projects I knew I wanted to do. Including decorating my oldest child's bedroom! A few years later and I finally gave my sweet oldest, Perry, a proper big boy room. Here's my advice when decorating a kid's bedroom to ensure it will grow with them for years to come!

1. Picking a color scheme / style

If you're anything like me, you have a Pinterest board or assortment of Instagram images saved to "Kids Bedroom." Maybe it's just me. But I used those images to settle on a style for his room.

For years, I have been saving down Americana themed boy rooms so I knew going with that color scheme would be a tried and true design for me. I wanted a tattersall  style rug to give the room a playful, soft base, and I landed on this Tori Rug from Stanton Carpet. From there, I built the rest of the room.

2. Invest in some, save on others

I'm big on finding pieces that will last and stand the test of time that are worth investing in. Then layering in pieces that I already own or that I find at antique shops or off Facebook marketplace.

For this room, the rug and the headboard are investment pieces that anchor the room. The headboard, custom designed with Coley Home, was an important piece of the design puzzle for me. Since Perry's room already had plantation shutters, I didn't plan on doing other window treatments. I knew I wanted to bring color and warmth in with upholstered headboards.

3. Remember, they will be kids

I love good design but I'm also a realistic mom of 3 kids under 6. Things get messy.

I didn't go over the top with wallpaper or expensive bedding or even a new bedside table. Instead, I painted the walls in a flat Sherwin-Williams Nonchalant White making it easy to touchup, selected cute and affordable bedding and found an antique, distressed dresser to place in between the two twin beds since I knew it would be covered in Legos and Hot Wheels.

The lamp and lampshade are from Ballard and the white dresser is a Pottery Barn Kids classic that I've had for years. It's still available online. I get asked a lot of about the mirror, too! I have several mirrors from Winstons Collection, including this pretty navy one in Perry's room.

You can read more of my thoughts on designing a kids' bedroom on the Coley Home blog I was featured in this month!

3 Easy Tips: Spring Entertaining Made Simple

Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to gather friends and family! Hosting doesn’t have to be stressful—just a few thoughtful touches can make it effortless and fun.I’ve put together three simple tips to help you set a beautiful table, host with ease, and entertain in style. Whether it’s a casual brunch or a backyard dinner, these ideas will keep things stress-free so you can enjoy the moment.Ready to make spring entertaining a breeze? Check out my top tips!

Spring is the perfect time to gather friends and family for a relaxed, joyful celebration. Whether you’re hosting a backyard brunch or an alfresco dinner, these simple tips will help you entertain with ease and style.

1. Staples to Dress the Table in Every Season

A well-set table sets the mood for any gathering. Keep a few timeless essentials on hand—neutral linen napkins, classic versatile plates (use code GARDENANDGRACE15! for 15% off mine!), and simple flatware. In spring, add fresh touches like a floral centerpiece, pastel-colored lighting, or woven placemats for a light and airy feel.

2. Easy Ways to Effortless Hosting

The secret to stress-free entertaining? Prep ahead and keep things simple. Have a folding table (or two), folding chairs (I love these bamboo chairs) on-hand, and a space in mind that flows nicely from the kitchen or grill. Choose dishes that can be made in advance, set up a self-serve drink station, and don’t be afraid to mix store-bought items with homemade touches. Guests appreciate a relaxed host far more than a perfect party.

3. No-Fuss Dresses to Entertain in Style

Comfortable and chic is the way to go. A breezy midi dress, a lightweight wrap dress, or a flowy maxi in cheerful spring hues will keep you looking polished without effort. Bonus points for machine-washable fabrics—because spills happen!

Favorite Low-Stress Recipes for a Crowd

Nothing makes hosting easier than a menu of crowd-pleasing, low-maintenance dishes. My go-to favorites include deviled eggs (always a hit!), classic pasta salad, warm blueberry cobbler, and juicy all-American hamburgers fresh off the grill.

Grilling not only fills the air with a welcoming aroma but also creates the perfect moment for the men to gather, chat, and enjoy a drink before sitting down to eat. These dishes can be prepped ahead or come together quickly, so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying your guests.

With these simple tips, spring entertaining can be as easy as it is enjoyable.

Transforming My Primary Bathroom: A Timeless Renovation

Renovating my primary bathroom was an exciting and transformative project. The space was outdated and poorly ventilated, so we decided to take it down to the studs and start fresh. Here’s how we turned it into a timeless retreat.

Renovating my primary bathroom was an exciting and transformative project. The space was outdated and poorly ventilated, so we decided to take it down to the studs and start fresh. Here’s how we turned it into a timeless retreat.

The Before

Before the renovation, the bathroom was dark and outdated. There was only one sink awkwardly positioned by the window, which made the layout feel unbalanced. The shower was cramped and poorly lit, with grout that hadn’t been maintained over the years. Additionally, the washer and dryer were located in the bathroom, taking up valuable space and contributing to the overall lack of functionality. To address this, we moved the laundry appliances to a newly created laundry room in the upstairs hallway, freeing up the bathroom for a more efficient layout.

Expanding the Space

The first major decision was to move a wall back 15 inches into the adjacent room. During the process, we discovered that the floor joists were sagging, so we ended up replacing them entirely. This required removing the ceiling in the foyer beneath the bathroom. Once the joists were replaced, we had the ceiling drywall redone and repainted, ensuring everything looked seamless.

This small adjustment made a huge difference, giving us enough room to add a water closet for the toilet and a double vanity. With the new layout in place, the design could truly shine.

Timeless Design Choices

I wanted a bathroom that would feel classic and elegant for years to come. Here are the design elements that brought that vision to life:

  1. Marble Everywhere: Marble countertops, floors, and shower tiles created a cohesive and luxurious look.

  2. Ogee Edges: The ogee edges on the countertops added a touch of sophistication.

  3. Molding Details: Crown molding and pencil molding enhanced the architectural details, while tile molding inside the shower tied everything together.

  4. Inset Cabinets: A custom vanity with inset cabinets provided a clean, tailored appearance.

  5. Framed Mirror: A framed mirror complemented the overall design and added warmth.

  6. Polished Nickel Fixtures: Plumbing fixtures in polished nickel by Newport Brass brought timeless elegance to the space.

  7. Floor Tile Border: To elevate the marble floors, I added a border by cutting larger shower tiles into long, narrow pieces.

Choosing Quality Materials and Vendors

Sourcing high-quality materials and working with trusted vendors were key to achieving the final look:

  • Standalone Tub: Sourced from Ferguson, it became a beautiful focal point. Here's a link to mine.

  • Marble Tile: Purchased from Floor and Decor, the marble added a timeless elegance.

  • Marble Countertop: Sourced from Stone Basyx and fabricated by Carolina Stone & Marble. The marble color is Shadow Storm, the same we have in our kitchen and butler's pantry.
  • Custom Vanity: Created by a Charlotte-based cabinet maker, the vanity perfectly fit our space and style.

  • Plumbing Fixtures: We chose polished nickel fixtures by Newport Brass from Majestic Bath, also available at Ferguson. Here's a link to the collection I used.

  • Paint: Walls painted with Benjamin Moore paint, purchased locally from Blackhawk Ace Hardware in Charlotte.

The Timeline

From start to finish, the renovation took about two months.

Tip! Select your plumbing fixtures, including the bathtub, prior to starting construction as some may have a longer lead time. After looking at shower and floor tile at many of the local tile shops, I ended up getting mine at Floor & Decor for two reasons: it was in stock, and I could hand-select the marble pieces for the shower and floor. Since marble is a natural stone, there's a lot of variation even within the same style and I didn't want to take the risk. I LOVE how it turned out. The color is Carrara Chateau. The only pieces that required a special order were the base molding which took about 5-7 days to arrive.

For the countertop, the vanity must be installed before they can template and fabricate (i.e., cut) the countertop. It's typically 1 week for them to come out and measure and another week, on average, for it to be fabricated and installed.

Despite the challenges of completely gutting the space and coordinating with various contractors, the timeline was well worth it for the result.

The Final Result

The newly renovated bathroom feels spacious, bright, and timeless. Every design element and material was carefully chosen to create a harmonious and elegant retreat that we’ll enjoy for years to come. This renovation taught me that thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship make all the difference.

If you’re planning a bathroom renovation, I hope this walk-through inspires you to create a space that’s both functional and timeless!

A Design Lover's Guide to Charleston

My husband and I were lucky enough to sneak off to Charleston for a quick getaway a few weeks ago! Child-free quality time in one of our favorite places before the rush of the holidays was such a treat. I shared a few of these recs on Instagram, but wanted to give them a more permanent spot on the blog, just in case it’s helpful for your planning!

WHERE WE ATE

With so many incredible places to eat, it can be hard to pick. But we have some go-to spots we almost never miss and even tried a few new places! Here’s what we ended up doing.

Lunch: Lewis Barbecue

If you like BBQ, you need to add this spot to your list! They serve Central Texas-style, which is known for its dry-rub meats. Must try: green chile corn pudding.

Pre-dinner drinks: Post House Inn

A restaurant in a charming home, nestled in a charming waterfront neighborhood? Sign me up! We just stopped in for drinks this time, but the brunch is worth adding to your list. Post House isn’t technically in Charleston, but it's worth the quick (and scenic!) drive into Mount Pleasant.

Dinner: Costa Cuisine

This spot is relatively new and is quickly climbing to the top of my must-try list! They specialize in Coastal-Italian, so think of bright, fresh flavors. I would start with the scallop crudo and burrata and split the pasta special for your main.

Dessert: We ended our food tour with dessert at the Thoroughbred Club at The Charleston Place. You could also do late-night cake from Carmella's Café & Dessert Bar

Breakfast: It has to be Miller’s All Day, one of the most-recommended places from y’all. The atmosphere and food were a great way to end our quick trip!

WHERE TO SHOP

Charleston has so many wonderful businesses. Here are a few I recommend:

  • Elizabeth Stuart: I’ll never miss this well-curated home store with antique and giftable goods when I’m in CHS.
  • Lake Pajamas: Some of my favorite pajamas for me and the kids! The fabric is SO soft.
  • Juliska: One of my go-to spots for all my tabletop needs.
  • Buru: They have some really unique women’s clothing, made in small batches.
  • George C Birlant & Co.: A high-quality antique store right in King Street.

WHERE TO STAY

This trip we stayed at The Charleston Place, which was so wonderful. I really loved the complimentary cruiser bikes — such a charming perk and one of the best ways to see the city! I’ve also stayed at Hotel Bennett, which is another fabulous option with a cute champagne bar.

7 Timeless Wallpaper Ideas from Homes We’ve Toured

Wallpaper is one of my favorite ways to dress up a space—it’s like wrapping an entire room in art! There are so many options out there, I wanted to highlight examples of tasteful applications. Follow me!

Last week we shared perfect paint colors from some of our favorite home tours of 2024, so today is dedicated to wallpaper!

Wallpaper is one of my favorite ways to dress up a space—it’s like wrapping an entire room in art! There are so many options out there, I wanted to highlight examples of tasteful applications.  Follow me!

This home hit the Charlotte market this earlier year, and is one of my favorite listing features to date! Interior designer Anne Pearson, who I’ve also worked with in my personal home, made magic. The home has so much personality, created with a fusion of color, texture and pattern, and yet it never feels overwhelming.  While these images are by Dustin Peck, you can find my video of the home tour here.

You’re immediately greeted by an iconic entryway, painted in Benjamin Moore Tissue Pink 1163. You can catch a peek of her powder room, just under the curved staircase — a sign of all the fun to come!

Charlotte artist Megan Daisy Milner’s home showed us how to decorate with heart—and art. This has to be one of the friendliest family homes we’ve ever seen, made all the more special with Megan’s artwork and wallpaper used throughout.

Did you know, many wallpapers are only sold to the trade, which means you have to work with an interior designer to access them! Refresh Your Dining Room and Tabletop for Christmas With These Finds

Next on my list is mapping out our holiday tablescape so for today's post I wanted to share a few ideas for refreshing your dining room.

One of the best things about this time of year is the opportunity to gather around the table with friends and family, from intimate dinner parties to larger fetes. I've been getting my dining room ready for all things holiday hosting — along with our other living spaces — and it's bringing me so much joy.

Next on my list is mapping out our holiday tablescape so for today's post I wanted to share a few ideas for refreshing your dining room.

wallpaper panels

In lieu of wallpapering an entire dining room, I opted for a pair of House of Harris panels from Society Social - currently 20% off with code EVERYTHING20. The scale makes a dramatic impact on the space for a fraction of the cost! Plus, I love how I can move these around the room or into a different space entirely if I ever want to.

This room also features some of my favorite decor items from Fig & Dove and my Visual Comfort chandelier and buffet lamps.

Be sure to check the shipping information if you'd like these panels by Christmas! I got mine framed at Frame Warehouse in Charlotte.

Florals and candles

Kate Morrison's Concord home is the definition of timeless beauty. I find myself going back to that home tour for inspiration over and over. I love how she decorated her table with classic candles and a stunning floral arrangement.

If you want something that will last longer than the holiday season, I'm a big fan of preserved florals and Botanica in Charlotte has a wide variety. They also sell at Scott's Antiques in Atlanta. The orchids on my buffet table in the first image are from there.

kate morrison's classic concord north carolina home

Taper candles never go out of style and can make a great gift with a set of acrylic or crystal holders. I love the lacquered twist or Lily of the Valley options for a slight twist on a classic.

lovely layers

I'm stilling pinching myself that I had the opportunity to team up with Tuckernuck for a home tour earlier this year. The tablescape, pulled together with homeowner and Nashville-based interior designer Kate Figler, was a more autumnal theme, but the formula can be applied to any dining room setup! You'll notice fun tassel napkin rings, a floral tablecloth and beautiful China plates.

I don't often replace my holiday hero pieces, like like China or silverware, but I love the idea of surprising guests with fresh, festive name card holders or napkin rings. These would make a great host gift, too.

And we can't forget about Megan Daisy Milner's dining room table. Her abstract artwork and traditional interiors had us all saving images for inspiration. My full home tour with Megan can be found on YouTube and so many great sources from her home are on the blog.

More Inspiration

It's hard to beat this new build in Raleigh, NC. The blog post with paint colors and more can be found here. The chandelier is from Visual Comfort and so pretty in person.

Timeless in Charlotte! This traditional home exudes southern elegance. I love the grasscloth wallcovering and robin egg blue cornices and panels.

I don't know what's more stunning. The Gracie wallpaper or the Visual Comfort chandelier. The tortoise glasses with the rose Estelle wine glasses are a pretty addition to this Eastover home's mahogany dining room table and place setting.

The holidays really are the best time of year. And the Black Friday sales, that have now become a constant, add a sense of thrill for the best deals. Here are the ones I think are worth shopping. For more holiday inspiration head over to my recent post on quick holiday home tips!

My Picks for the Best Lighting On Sale This Black Friday

Visual Comfort's Black Friday sale is one I wanted to make sure to share with the Garden & Grace community. I know there are so many sales this time of year that it can be overwhelming, but if fresh lighting is on your wishlist, Visual Comfort will be 20% off.

garden & grace home tour conversation room
The lamp in my conversation room is from my other favorite lighting brand Pooky. They're offering 15% off for Black Friday.

I've spoken with dozens of designers and have spent many years pouring over inspiring interiors. I've learned lighting is the one of those things that can have a big impact on a room, without making any structural changes. I experienced this in my own home, too!

For that reason, Visual Comfort and Pooky's Black Friday sale are ones I wanted to make sure to share with the Garden & Grace community. I know there are so many sales this time of year that it can be overwhelming, but if fresh lighting is on your wishlist, Visual Comfort will be 20% off and Pooky is 15% - 20% depending on how much you spend.

I've curated a roundup of some really pretty pieces below, some of which I have in my personal home. Happy shopping!

Buffet Lamps

Chandeliers

Floor Lamps

Sconces

In case you missed it... We dedicated a post to lighting earlier this year that also has tons of photos for inspiration and some additional Visual Comfort finds!

A Design-Enthusiast’s (aka me!) Journey to an Elegant, Family-Friendly Living Space

As we move into the holiday and a cozier time of year, I’m feeling so grateful for my home. In the last couple of weeks I’ve talked about how I’m decorating this year, quick Christmas prep tips and my love for Fig & Dove, so today I wanted to give you a closer look at my living spaces.

As we move into the holiday and a cozier time of year, I’m feeling so grateful for my home. In the last couple of weeks I’ve talked about how I’m decorating this year, quick Christmas prep tips and my love for Fig & Dove, so today I wanted to give you a closer look at my living spaces.

I worked with Anne Pearson to pull together the living and dining room and am so happy with how it turned out! I wanted these rooms to feel unique, grounded and formal but still comfortable enough for our family to enjoy. Let’s step into my home!

LIVING ROOM

In terms of furniture for our living room, I wanted to design something that’s both timeless and cozy. These sofas are a collaboration between Lester Furniture and Cambridge Row, and totally embraced my vision. I also think mixing in antiques helps foster that timeless feeling in a space. My brown antique chest is from Canterbury Antiques in Nashville. After a lot of samples, I landed on Creamy by Sherwin Williams in an eggshell finish and Loggia by Sherwin Williams in a semi-gloss finish on the trim and fireplace. It's a warm, formal look that pairs so well with my blue-green silk drapes and neutral rug.

dining room

The dining room has become one of my favorite rooms in the house. I especially love the subtle pop of color we did on the ceiling. It’s Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball in full gloss.

I’ve said it before, but antiques are a must in every room for achieving a traditional style. In this space, the dining room chairs are from The KS Collection, a wonderful antique store in Nashville. The dining room table was a result of a long-time search on Facebook Marketplace! Hint: search for "double pedestal mahogany dining table." It includes an extension and table pad, and I only paid $800. Besides one minor scratch it's in great condition. Definitely a favorite second hand find!

The lamps are from Visual Comfort and so is my chandelier! It's easily, one of my all-time favorite lighting brands and is constantly adding new pieces to their collection. Finally, I polished off the space with orchids from Botanica. If you’re in Charlotte you have to stop in (thankfully, you can shop online and at Scott's Market in Atlanta, too). Their flowers are real, but preserved, so they last for about five years!

conversation room

I’ve given you a tour of my conversation room before, so I wanted to share a few more sources! There are so many details I love in this room. The club chairs, which I love sinking into with my morning coffee, are from Wesley Hall. I have a couple of pieces from Poppy’s of Macon including the burlwood waterfall coffee table and the chest! I worked with Laurin White of Cambridge Row to pull together my vision for this space. It's better than I could have dreamt. Oh! and the federal bullseye mirror was also a Facebook Marketplace find that Laurin told me to immediately grab when she saw the picture of it. I paid under $300, a fraction of the price in most retail shops.

The rug in this room is so special to me. It’s from English Village Lane and the topiary details along the border make me so happy. It’s also incredibly durable and easy to clean, a non-negotiable in a house full of kids and pets!

The window treatments in my conversation room really pull the space together. The cornice boards, which are in Thibaut Williamson fabric, help the room feel buttoned up while the Schumacher brown check drapes add some whimsy — a perfect balance!

I share more about my Christmas decor here including this amazing no-fuss mantle garland that instantly elevates the room. For more sources in my home, check out my past blogs on the powder room and boys’ bathroom.

See How I Got My Home Holiday Ready With Fig & Dove

This holiday season I had the total joy of working with Fig & Dove to get my home holiday ready. I'm going to walk you through my living, dining and conversation rooms. Let the Christmas cheer begin!

This holiday season I had the total joy of working with Fig & Dove to get my home holiday ready. Interior designer Colleen Waguespack started Fig & Dove because, as a designer, she couldn't find holiday decor that complemented her clients' elevated interiors. Her pieces are meant to seamlessly blend with your personal home, and everything at Fig & Dove works together. I love how you can get one or two pieces a year and build a cohesive collection of timeless decor that you'll treasure forever.

I'm going to walk you through my living, dining and conversation rooms. Let the Christmas cheer begin!

LIVING ROOM

Let's start this holiday home tour in my living room! I just love the way our tree looks by the fireplace, especially with those gorgeous Fig & Dove stockings! The stocking holders are totally genius — they're very kid-friendly which is a must in our house. You can dress up your stockings even more by adding a bauble tassel. I went with the ombre gold option. I also love the idea of putting these on dresser knobs in a guest room so your guests get a dose of holiday cheer, too.

I use a lot of blues, greens and browns in my home, so I really appreciate how these ornaments work with the existing space rather than compete or stand out too much. The double glass ball ornament is so pretty and adds some unique dimension among the other ball ornaments. The gilded doves are so special but not fragile — again, a must with three little kids and a dog running around!

The classic look is polished off with a tree skirt, also from Fig & Dove. It's definitely an investment but it really pulls the scheme together and I know I'll use it forever.

dining room

I couldn't take my eyes off the dining room during this photoshoot. I'm so proud of this space and a few Fig & Dove pieces really made it shine. The gold decorative angel doubles as a tree topper, but I really liked having it on the table to help carry some elements from my living room into the space.

One of my favorite holiday decor tricks is to hang a wreath on mirrors. All you need to do is give this Fig & Dove boxwood wreath a quick fluff and then voila! It's tied with a sash — one of Fig & Dove's calling cards! They have so many options to choose from. If you're someone who likes to keep a wreath up all year, you can just switch out the sash depending on the holiday.

conversation room

Last but not at all least, is my conversation room. I was seriously impressed with the Fig & Dove gold magnolia garland we used in this room.

I find live garland to be pricey—considering you have to toss it every year—and have been on the hunt for a good faux option. I haven't found something with as much depth and texture as this one. It was super easy to lay across the mantle, too. It's an investment piece but something you'll admire for a long, long time. We jazzed it up with a few small stockings and flameless candles

How the Textiles and Upholstered Furniture at High Point Market Got My Wheels Turning

I’m still feeling so inspired after 48 hours in High Point last month. Today’s post is all about upholstered furniture, which totally stole the show at High Point — at least for me!

Even tonal pieces had more intrigue, like this sofa with a leather base and nailheads.

I’m still feeling so inspired after 48 hours in High Point last month. I’ve already shared a breakdown of all the great showrooms I had the chance to visit and the trends I’m eyeing. Today’s post is all about upholstered furniture, which totally stole the show at High Point — at least for me!

high point market upholstered furniture trends captured by garden and grace
Loved this large pattern with contrast piping!

It’s not just about a comfortable sofa or picking the right shade of neutral anymore. Upholstery is often times the star of the design and stands out with its unique curves and lines and layered textiles and patterns.

high point market upholstered furniture trends captured by garden and grace
The shape, color and piping really caught my eye on this Sherrill Furniture accent chair.

This new wave of design is all about curved arms, high backs and carved wooden legs. I also noticed a focus on function. Seat depth and height and storage are among top considerations. I also saw a lot of recliner options which the industry calls “motion” furniture.

Talk about function, even these barstools from the Designmasters Showroom swivel

One of the biggest trends seen at High Point was the need for easy cleaning. Crypton played a big role here with its patented, and seriously impressive, fabrics. These fabrics can practically resist any spill or stain with a little Dawn dish soap and warm water.

high point market upholstered furniture trends captured by garden and grace
It's really cool to see durable, easy-to-clean fabrics like these leathers with Crypton

I got to see this in action and as a mom of three with a dog and a busy household, stain resistance is ultra important. The science behind it is very impressive and we got to hear from the Crypton team more behind the brand and science.

Crypton only sells to furniture makers so you can’t buy directly from them, but when you’re shopping for a new piece of furniture, be sure to ask if they offer Crypton fabric. Brands like Designmaster Furniture, One Kings Lane and Ballard Designs all do.

high point market upholstered furniture trends captured by garden and grace
Tweed, leather, nailheads and flannel all on one chair! Found this Crypton chair in the Designermasters Furniture showroom.

In terms of aesthetics, beauty is all in the details! It’s not just about the hero fabric anymore. It’s also about the piping, trim, box-pleat, skirt and so much more. I love seeing designers’ creativity come out in these details and how they truly elevate the entire room

Loved the trim on this Sherrill Furniture piece!

With all of this new insight and information, my wheels are turning on how I will design my next upholstered piece! I’m thinking scallops, pattern play and a slightly more petite scale for my young kids. The dreaming has just begun!

A storage bench doesn't get more precious than this one from Sherrill Furniture.

It's Time to Deck The Halls! Here Are My Quick Festive Home Decorating Tips

We are slowly shifting into holiday mode in my house, so I wanted to share a few tips to help you create home for the holidays, too!

Last week I shared a detailed breakdown of how I plan to decorate my personal home for the holidays. Today we’re talking about those final, quick touches that help bring the Christmas magic to life even more!

PILLOWS

Herringbone throw blankets have become a recent favorite layer of mine. Imagine having a cozy night by the fire and having a lightweight blanket that’s pretty enough to leave out all year round!

PICTURE FRAMES & CANDLES

Refresh your family pictures and light a Christmas candle (love these by Nest). Little touches like these make a big difference.

LAMPSHADES

Go the extra mile in your design by replacing the plain white lampshade with an ivory pleated lampshade or add some color with a small print or block print shade. This is one trend I’m absolutely loving!

ARTWORK

Deck the halls with fresh artwork. Christina Dowdy and Emily Ward are some of my favorite artists. I also love abstract artists like April Atchley and Megan Daisy Milner. If you're local to Charlotte, Cotswold Marketplace is a good source for ready to hang original artwork.

MY FAVORITE TRICK

Did you notice the presents in the bookshelf? This Christmas decor trick is a great way to fill space, especially in bookshelves and on tabletops, with inexpensive holiday decor. This wrapping paper is from $6 Target and the silk brown ribbon can be found on Amazon. A winning combination for subtle, classic Christmas cheer.

classic built-in book shelf styled with personal touches including fresh artwork for the holidays
FESTIVE GLASSWARE

The holiday season calls for a new set of plates or glasses that make hosting a small or impromptu holiday gathering so much fun! I love these small plates, Estelle glasses and $3 target glasses

MUSIC

And lastly, don’t forget to set the mood with a Christmas playlist for every occasion. And when in doubt, pick greenery from your yard for a fresh, inexpensive holiday look!

How I Decorate for Christmas

We are slowly shifting into holiday mode in my house, so I wanted to share a few tips to help you create home for the holidays, too!

We are slowly shifting into holiday mode in my house, so I wanted to share my holiday decorating game plan in hopes to help you create home for the holidays, too. PS! I've added a Christmas collection on LTK so you can shop my holiday decor, festive outfits and children's pajamas all in one place.

My first suggestion is to keep the Christmas decor simple and complimentary of your home decor. This gilded angel is versatile and can be placed on top of a tree or on any tabletop. It pairs nicely with any gold home decor!

I usually have two trees, and pre-lit ones make holiday decorating so much easier! This one was borrowed from a friend but I loved the size and scale so much I’m planning on buying one during the after Christmas sales this year. This viral Lowe’s Christmas tree has my attention and is tempting me to buy now!

I typically go with elevated neutrals for ornaments. Over the years I’ve fallen in love with Fig & Dove’s ornaments and mix them in with my Amazon ornaments for the perfect blend of blue/green color and gold. They're shatterproof and only $23 for 30 ornaments! Tip: Remove the hanger provided and replace them with floral wire to tie the balls on top of Christmas tree branches.

Here's the tree before the ornaments were added, scroll down to see how I decorated it!

These are a new add this year but I love how it adds more interest to the tree! Just fluff and place in the tree.

I love inviting my kids to help, too! It makes the process and end result personal for them and I love making these memories with them! My daughter got her first Bauble Stocking last year and was excited to add it to the tree this year. She’s also holding a ceramic beautiful ornament with pearls gifted to me by my aunt when I was younger. It’s special to me and I love how she cherishes it, too!

Personalized Christmas stockings are a must for everyone in the family!  The kids stockings complement my husband and my stockings but have more personality and childlike designs. I added the cuff for a more traditional look.

For anyone with kids or pets, these acrylic stocking holders have a patten protected technology that’s engineered the gold hook to sit in the acrylic base and doesn’t fall when the stocking is filled with gifts or pulled by little hands or paws. (Genius!)

I added gold branches, flameless candles and live greenery on the mantle! It’s an easy way to dress up the mantle without overpowering it with garland and it’s so pretty at night.

Side note: My Frame TV picture frame was an investment but I can’t imagine not having it now. I have the pale gold — currently 15% off.

For fresh florals, I look to the garden! These are magnolias and greenery clipped from the yard organically arranged for an understated, rich in color floral arrangement that looks good for days.

I add these velvet ornaments in a marble bowl surrounded by fresh greenery — again right in line with the color palette of the room. My color is no longer available but they have a mulberry color I’m loving!

This gold tassel from Fig & Dove on antique furniture, stockings, gifts or door handles adds another touch of Christmas cheer! I love the acrylic on this one for a more modern feel.

I always add a wreath to the front door and this year I went with a white berry round wreath with a velvet blush sash. The blue and gold monogram feels so Southern to me and I love how it’s festive without being too “Christmasy."

Finally, when in doubt, add ribbon! It’s easiest way to decorate for the holidays. I love the peacock blue velvet with gold trim! It’s Christmas without again being well, too “Christmasy.”

I just got back from two jam-packed days at High Point Market. I was so honored to be part of the Design Influencers Tour program this season. As part of the program I had the chance to visit 20-plus showrooms and learn more about products and trends to come in the home industry.

Over the next month I'll be diving deeper into what I've learned—and sharing so much inspiration. For today's post I wanted to give you a quick overview of all the amazing vendors I got to see and meet.

Regina Andrew is a Detroit-based company with an expansive collection of lighting and other home decor. I loved these floral sculptural pieces.

First stop on the tour: Regina Andrew

Accent Decor specializes in trendy vases and vessels. They sell their wares to florists, home stores and other retailers. I fell in love with these large textured lemon planters. I could see them filled with lush green plants or faux pomegranates, or even as an ice bucket with wine for a small dinner party.

Joybird is known for its direct-to-consumer midcentury modern furniture. They're known for their use of color and have a wide-selection of fabrics available at a good price point.

A few things caught my eye at home decor and lighting vendor Jamie Young. I loved this chair (under $700!) and burlwood console. Jamie herself provided the tour of the showroom and was a delight to meet. Her world travels and family have inspired her design.

We made a few Crypton stops, including Cyrpton for Norwalk Furniture.  These textiles are so crucial when you have kids and pets as it makes it easy to get out any stain. I loved that you could add this durable, timeless fabric to any Norwalk Furniture frame.

Hinkley Lighting is a new-to-me brand that I was really excited to see! Lighting makes a space shine—in more ways than one—and I appreciate the price point of this brand. They debuted a new collection with Frederick Ramond that stood out to me. I could see these whimsical pieces in a scullery, nursery or even a more intimate dining space with Gracie wallpaper.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) was a cool stop on our whirlwind tour. We got to see an induction stove and a countertop that has built-in charging stations for your phone.

These beetle print occasional chairs were my favorite piece at the Crytpon for Designmaster showroom. I could see these comfy swivel chairs around a game table or paired with a mustard sofa with merlot contrast piping in a teenager playroom.

Lexington Home Brand has a large permanent showroom about 15 minutes from downtown High Point with an extensive collection. It was fun to see their outdoor living collection! No surprise—this blue and white striped outdoor piece was calling my name.

Asian Loft  has some really unique pieces from all over Asia. The showroom is huge and a great place to go if you're looking for one-of-a-kind statement pieces. You can find it all on their website, too!

Hooker Furnishings really wowed me this season. The chief creative director, Caroline Hipple, shows incredible vision and discernment when it comes to styles shown at Hooker. The color palettes in their collections were rich and colorful. It's nice to see us saying good-bye to gray!

FlowDécor has great price points for neutral, earth-toned pieces. Their lamps and cotton-backed lamp shades are all at kind of unbelievable price points.

Bernhardt's outdoor collection was very impressive. Most people have heard of Bernhardt but I didn't realize they had such an extensive outdoor collection. It's clear these large-scale pieces will stand the test of time.

Decor-Rest has been specializing in upholstered home furnishings for 50 years. I loved getting to know the family history and story behind the business that's motto is "furnishing homes with love."

Crypton for Sherrill Furniture features light, preppy fabrics that just made me happy! This showroom was my personal favorite.  It included furniture from two Sherrill Furniture lines -- Mr.  and Mrs. Howard and Lillian August. If you're near Charlotte, you can now visit the new Mrs. Howard store in the Eastover neighborhood to see it all for yourself! Fun fact, Garden & Grace directory member, Andrew Roby, renovated and rebuilt the space to beautifully reflect the Mrs. Howard brand.

Stickley's high-quality furniture was a crowd-pleaser. This smaller scale cabinet was unlike anything I've seen on the market. When House Beautiful editors saw it, they said they could see it in a larger luxury bathroom to add warmth and storage in equal measure—and I agree.

Natuzzi is a contemporary Italian furniture brand. The pieces were so unique and innovative -- and surprisingly comfortable!

Universal's Coastal Living Collection stood out to me. I loved their pieces for a comfortable and casual beach home. I especially loved these small, versatile stools. Can't you see them in a performance stripe with a contrast piping for a pop of fun!

3 Home Design Trends I'm Watching in 2025

After two days filled with design-focused conversations and touring showrooms filled home furnishings and accessories, I learned a lot about what's coming in 2025, from trending materials to a focus on functional pieces. Here are my biggest takeaways.

garden and grace influencer program high point market north carolina design fall 2025
Jamie Young Co. Showroom

After two days filled with design-focused conversations and touring showrooms filled home furnishings and accessories, I learned a lot about what's coming in 2025, from trending materials to a focus on functional pieces. Here are my biggest takeaways.

1. Rattan & Natural Materials Are In

I was thrilled to see rattan and other natural materials present across many of the showrooms that resonated with me. It's definitely going to be popular next year, but to me, it's timeless. These materials have the power to really ground a space, especially if you're using high-gloss paints or fanciful wall coverings.

2. There's a Focus on Function

Today's furniture designers and home goods manufacturers are tasked with balancing style and purpose. For instance, this cocktail table is on casters and is a little more petite, which makes it easy to move around a room. Walking around High Point, I got the sense people are designing for living—and, of course, looking.

Sherrill Furniture - Mr. and Mrs. Howard

It was hard to capture the intentional design of Stickley Furniture, but trust me it was there. For instance, this tall boy with dovetail drawers also had compartments on the top drawer for spare change, personal items or really, any small items. How clever!

Stickley Furniture

3. Color...With Piping and TRIM!

Color has been making its way into home furnishings for the last couple of years, and I love it! This year I noticed color isn't going anywhere, but contrast piping and trim are making it feel more fresh and interesting. I love how piping can tie in other colors from the room, making it feels like a cohesive palette.

How to Infuse Character in Your Home Through Millwork

From paneled walls to coffered ceilings to fireplace surrounds, millwork can infuse so much character into your home.

Whether you're constructing a new build or renovating an existing home, infusing character helps communicate traditional, classic design. From custom doors to fireplace surrounds to ornate moldings, custom millwork can elevate your home in a way you'll treasure for a long, long time. There's no room that can't benefit from those extra details, so we partnered with ITC Millwork to show examples where millwork shines.

Entryways & Halls

When I step into a home, the entryway often sets the tone for the entire space. The casing around windows and doors plays a pivotal role in framing these openings and can instantly elevate the first impression. I love the idea of using panel moulding and tongue and groove details to add dimension to the walls, creating a warm and inviting entry that welcomes guests. These small touches can transform a simple hallway into a memorable space that reflects your personal style.

Living Spaces

I appreciate the richness that walnut brings to a room, with its warm tones and elegant grain patterns. Incorporating custom millwork elements like coffered ceilings, built-in shelves, and decorative trim can add depth and character, turning a generic room into a cozy haven. Each detail contributes to the overall narrative of your home, allowing you to express your tastes while maintaining a sense of sophistication.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the millwork in these spaces truly shines. Elegant box beams and cohesive tongue and groove details on the walls and ceiling create a visually stunning affect. I love how extending the cabinets to the ceiling maximizes storage and creates a seamless, inviting look.

Millwork is one way to make sure your design is carried from the baseboards to the ceiling. In the examples we pulled below, I really appreciate how the millwork helps add dimension and elegance. These spaces feel polished and serene—ideal for a primary suite!
