Home Tour: Dreamy Family Estate in Small Town North Carolina
In the heart of Concord, NC, a beloved family home has come full circle—recently purchased by granddaughter, Mary Margaret Underwood of Underwood Design. With thoughtful renovations and her own fresh style, she’s turned it into an entertainer’s dream while keeping all its historic charm. Outside, the backyard is a true showstopper with a sparkling pool, Chippendale railing, bluestone pavers, and plenty of space for gathering. Inside, the renovated kitchen and large bar with a sitting area make hosting effortless, blending timeless character with fresh updates.
After acquiring the cherished family home, Mary Margaret Underwood of Underwood Design embarked on a heartfelt renovation—infusing her own design sensibilities without erasing the property’s legacy. The result? A perfect fusion of historic charm and fresh personality—an entertainer’s haven thoughtfully refashioned into an even more welcoming, dynamic space.
I had the opportunity to tour the home with Concord and Charlotte-based interior designer, Mary Margaret Underwood, and can’t wait to show you around.
You may have seen the Instagram feature I shared on this home earlier this year. It’s here if you want to take a look but I’ll share more details, paint colors and sources below.
THE EXTERIOR
The exterior siding paint color isn't available but the shutters are SW Charleston Green. The front door is Fine Paints of Europe matched to the Charleston Green on the shutters. The planters flanking the front door are a beautiful non-rot planter from Eastover Collection. I love the stately boxwood anchor with mature but groomed ivy flowing off the edges. The landscape design is by Jeff Allan Landscape Architecture based out of Winston Salem. I've toured several homes he's done, including this one, and am always impressed.
The foyer is covered in a French wallpaper from Zuber called Eldorado which is a Block-Printed panoramic scenic wallpaper. It was originally in the home but after the home caught fire in the 1980's, Mary Margaret's mother had it all replaced due to damage. It was a design element Mary Margaret dare not touch when she acquired the home. The chandelier was moved from the formal living room into the entryway and anchored by her old dining room table that can expand and be additional seating for large family gatherings and parties.

THE KITCHEN
The kitchen was completely redesigned and opened up to allow for more island and counter space as well as storage. The new appliances which include, a 36” SubZero Panel Ready Refrigerator and Freezer, SubZero 30” Under-counter Panel Ready Refrigerator Drawers, Cove 24” Panel Ready dishwasher, Wolf 24” Built in Coffee System, Zephyr Lux 63” White ceiling with internal blower and the jewel piece Lacanche Range, modernize the space while keeping the cabinetry seamless. The Lacanche French Stove and Oven Range is the Classique Changny 1800 style in French Blue with Brass Trim and definitely makes a statement.
The countertops are Olympian White Danby in a honed finish with a unique twist on the kitchen island. The island had a mitered edge with a drop edge relief and custom carved profile making it just different enough to add some interest.

The gilded iron linear pendant light over the kitchen island is from Visual Comfort and linked here. The bar stools are from Hickory Chair and upholstered in Lewis and Wood fabric.
When I shared the home tour on Instagram, I had lots of questions about the breakfast table. It's the perfect balance of old in this new kitchen! It's a custom yew banded oval racetrack trestle table from Englishman’s Fine Furnishings.
THE FORMAL LIVING SPACE
The large formal living room is filled with a mix of antiques and more contemporary pieces. The walls included! The artwork throughout the home was extensive and an incredible mix of antique and contemporary collected through travel, local galleries and passed down from family members. The oversized brown and blue rug anchored the room and helped to warm the traditional space. This one was sourced through Charlotte Rug Gallery. The room is painted in Farrow and Ball Pointing on the walls and Farrow and Ball Skylight on ceiling.
THE CASUAL LIVING SPACES
Possibly my favorite room in the home was this blue drenched sitting room with warm brown tones and layers of inviting reds. The cozy space was a welcomed change from the large, more formal spaces that led to it. With bookshelves covered in family memoriabilia and meaningful artwork, this room is one of the most used by the family. It's painted in Farrow & Ball Light Blue.

The additional casual living space is off the family bar and is perfectly furnished with four oversized leather chairs anchored by a custom ottoman game table. The natural light pouring into the room and sightline to the hydrangea filled landscape, make it a perfect morning coffee spot.
THE DINING ROOM
The dining room is home to many of the family portraits and the original chandelier. It hosts a large antique claw foot dining table and has been recently updated with upholstered walls and a lacquered ceiling to add interest without taking away from its traditional design.

THE BAR
The family bar is one of the most unique rooms I have seen in a home! It's a recent addition to allow for an indoor gathering space right off the pool and veranda. While it's all new, it looks and feels like it's always been a part of the house. Behind the smoky antique mirror is the television beautifully disguised and serves as a reflection of the rooms colorful and unique artwork. The tile floors allow for wet feet to enter the home to grab a snack or drink before heading back outside to the pool and veranda. It also allows Mary Margaret to entertain without everyone congregating in the kitchen. The bar is complete with beer on tap, a cooling fridge, dishwasher and wine cooler.
THE POOLSIDE BATHROOM
The full bathroom off the bar is intended to give guests a place to shower off, change and use the restroom without having to come through the house. The fun bathroom floor tile is called Modulo Quadro Nero/ Sky and purchased at Renaissance Tile & Bath.

BONUS CONTENT!
The back hall stairs are filled with more family photos and portraits as well as a more modern gold geometric wallpaper. The antelope stair running and stairwell lighting added a rich design element to the space. The entire home was filled with framed newspaper clippings and old store receipts from the family business dating back to Mary Margaret's great grandfather. It was truly an honor to walk the halls and explore the charm of this stately Concord, NC home that has been in the family for generations.

Come With Me Behind the Scenes at High Point Market
I just got back from two jam-packed days at market. I was so honored to be part of the Design Influencers Tour program this season. Here's a glimpse at what I saw.
I just got back from two jam-packed days at High Point Market. I was so honored to be part of the Design Influencers Tour program this season. As part of the program I had the chance to visit 20-plus showrooms and learn more about products and trends to come in the home industry.
Over the next month I'll be diving deeper into what I've learned—and sharing so much inspiration. For today's post I wanted to give you a quick overview of all the amazing vendors I got to see and meet.
Regina Andrew is a Detroit-based company with an expansive collection of lighting and other home decor. I loved these floral sculptural pieces.
Accent Decor specializes in trendy vases and vessels. They sell their wares to florists, home stores and other retailers. I fell in love with these large textured lemon planters. I could see them filled with lush green plants or faux pomegranates, or even as an ice bucket with wine for a small dinner party.
Joybird is known for its direct-to-consumer midcentury modern furniture. They're known for their use of color and have a wide-selection of fabrics available at a good price point.
A few things caught my eye at home decor and lighting vendor Jamie Young. I loved this chair (under $700!) and burlwood console. Jamie herself provided the tour of the showroom and was a delight to meet. Her world travels and family have inspired her design.
We made a few Crypton stops, including Cyrpton for Norwalk Furniture. These textiles are so crucial when you have kids and pets as it makes it easy to get out any stain. I loved that you could add this durable, timeless fabric to any Norwalk Furniture frame.
Hinkley Lighting is a new-to-me brand that I was really excited to see! Lighting makes a space shine—in more ways than one—and I appreciate the price point of this brand. They debuted a new collection with Frederick Ramond that stood out to me. I could see these whimsical pieces in a scullery, nursery or even a more intimate dining space with Gracie wallpaper.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) was a cool stop on our whirlwind tour. We got to see an induction stove and a countertop that has built-in charging stations for your phone.
These beetle print occasional chairs were my favorite piece at the Crytpon for Designmaster showroom. I could see these comfy swivel chairs around a game table or paired with a mustard sofa with merlot contrast piping in a teenager playroom.
Lexington Home Brand has a large permanent showroom about 15 minutes from downtown High Point with an extensive collection. It was fun to see their outdoor living collection! No surprise—this blue and white striped outdoor piece was calling my name.
Asian Loft has some really unique pieces from all over Asia. The showroom is huge and a great place to go if you're looking for one-of-a-kind statement pieces. You can find it all on their website, too!
Hooker Furnishings really wowed me this season. The chief creative director, Caroline Hipple, shows incredible vision and discernment when it comes to styles shown at Hooker. The color palettes in their collections were rich and colorful. It's nice to see us saying good-bye to gray!
FlowDécor has great price points for neutral, earth-toned pieces. Their lamps and cotton-backed lamp shades are all at kind of unbelievable price points.
Bernhardt's outdoor collection was very impressive. Most people have heard of Bernhardt but I didn't realize they had such an extensive outdoor collection. It's clear these large-scale pieces will stand the test of time.
Decor-Rest has been specializing in upholstered home furnishings for 50 years. I loved getting to know the family history and story behind the business that's motto is "furnishing homes with love."
Crypton for Sherrill Furniture features light, preppy fabrics that just made me happy! This showroom was my personal favorite. It included furniture from two Sherrill Furniture lines -- Mr. and Mrs. Howard and Lillian August. If you're near Charlotte, you can now visit the new Mrs. Howard store in the Eastover neighborhood to see it all for yourself! Fun fact, Garden & Grace directory member, Andrew Roby, renovated and rebuilt the space to beautifully reflect the Mrs. Howard brand.
Stickley's high-quality furniture was a crowd-pleaser. This smaller scale cabinet was unlike anything I've seen on the market. When House Beautiful editors saw it, they said they could see it in a larger luxury bathroom to add warmth and storage in equal measure—and I agree.
Natuzzi is a contemporary Italian furniture brand. The pieces were so unique and innovative -- and surprisingly comfortable!
Universal's Coastal Living Collection stood out to me. I loved their pieces for a comfortable and casual beach home. I especially loved these small, versatile stools. Can't you see them in a performance stripe with a contrast piping for a pop of fun!
I learned so much from my time at High Point Furniture Market and left so inspired after spending it with eight other influencers that are so talented and kind!
Lately on the blog... We shared ways to add character to your home (hint: millwork plays a big role) and 3 things to know about timeless topiaries.
20 Photos of Inspiring Exteriors in Fall
My camera roll is filled with exteriors that stop me in my tracks all year round, but there's something extra special about this time of year. I love how the light and leaves change, so even the homes that aren't accessorized for the season still feel festive. Let's take an autumnal walk.

It won't surprise you that I'm a big fan of minimal, classic fall decor. Think: A few aubergine mums and a pumpkin or two festooning the front porch. I love the simplicity — and that it's appropriate until Thanksgiving.
Take an autumnal walk with us.

Get inspired with our latest home tour, where interior designer Kate Figler shows off her masterful ability to layer color and patterns for one personality-packed Nashville home.
Home Tour: See inside designer Kate Figler's personality-packed Nashville home
Interior designer Kate Figler graciously welcomed us into her 1945 Nashville home — designed by beloved architect Edwin Keeble — for a picture-perfect tour. If you think the outside is charming, just wait until you explore the interiors.TKTKT
This home tour is presented by Tuckernuck, a brand both Kate and I adore — and now even more because they offer the same quality and style for the home! You can shop our exact looks and Kate's fabulous fall tablescape directly in this post.
Interior designer Kate Figler graciously welcomed us into her 1945 Nashville home — designed by beloved architect Edwin Keeble — for a picture-perfect tour. If you think the outside is charming, just wait until you explore the interiors.
The house color is Benjamin Moore Soft Chamois OC-13 and the shutters are a true black like Benjamin Moore Black 2132-10. The roof existed before Kate made the home her own, but its similar to GAF’s Charcoal color for its asphalt shingle lines.
"I love its classic Cape style exterior as well as the charm of its interior architectural details like the curved entry staircase and the low archway leading into our powder bath," Kate says of her stylish home.
Let's step inside that iconic entryway, painted in Benjamin Moore Tissue Pink 1163. The powder room was like a secret hideaway dressed in Scalamandre Raphael Green wallpaper.
Original charm is abundant, and Kate’s designer eye is showcased in every room. From the original curved staircase to the Dutch door in the dining room, it’s easy to get lost in this enchanting and large family home.
This family den is painted in Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue HC-156.
I really admire Kate's ability to work with a lot of color, texture and pattern while keeping the space feeling timeless and edited. This living space for example, features a durable textured rug, a deep cozy sectional and fun botanical prints. "The color palette throughout our home also feels very joyful and like a true expression of our family. Every room is bright, comfortable and approachable — all our furniture is meant to be cuddled up on and lived in," Kate says.
One of my favorite rooms in the house is the dining room. Can you imagine the dinner parties? Swoon.
The walls are covered a beautiful purple wallpaper by House of Harris. I love how the Tuckernuck fall home finds pull in some of those plums, purples and browns. The florals are grounded with tortoise tumblers and rattan placemats. The chairs keep the room comfortable.
The kitchen has the most gorgeous wall of windows, making the space feel bright and open. The runner really ties in the color you see throughout the rest of the home. The kitchen walls and cabinets are painted in one of our all-time favorite, classic paint colors: Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17.
These pantry doors come with the most precious story. The previous homeowners marked their kids' heights on the original pantry and asked to keep them. Kate had these new doors made and went with a purple fabric to tie in the happy hue from the rest of her house.
Kate's layering skills are on full displace in the bedrooms. The canopy over the bed totally transforms the room.
Each corner of Kate's home is so well thought out. There's a careful balance between comfort and style that makes it an ideal Garden & Grace home tour.
To maximize utility for their family home, Kate recently added a walkway, drop zone and a garage with guest quarters above. I love this solution for older homes that sometimes lack the storage family's today crave. While this space is still in-progress, I just couldn't help but show it! Imagine the new exterior of the walkway with boxwoods and hydrangeas. Landscaping went in shortly after my tour!
For more on this home, visit Instagram and the longer version home tour on YouTube coming Thursday, 10/17. Hope you enjoyed this home as much as I did! Special thank you to Kate Figler for opening her home and Tuckernuck for sponsoring it.

Home Tour: This North Carolina Home is Abundant with Timeless Beauty
It’s hard to believe we’re settling into the last few months of the year. And as the leaves begin to fall, it’s actually the perfect time to start thinking about your 2025 garden. Here's what the pros from our Garden & Grace directory suggest.
This summer we took you on a tour of Kate Morrison's storied Concord, North Carolina garden. She's the owner of Eastover Collection, where she designs custom planters, garden accents and window boxes. Lucky for us, her timeless taste is just as present inside her home as it is throughout her garden designs.
Let us show you around her thoughtful, classic home.
Moving through Kate's home, you feel a sense of ease and delight. I think that has a lot to do with the gentle blue and green color pallet and the emphases on floral textiles and botanicals throughout.
The foyer welcomes you with Benjamin Moore's Woodlawn Blue. Farrow and Ball Chappell Green, used in the small hallway leading to the guest room, is a beautiful blend of blue and green.
She balances the soft colors and patterns with strong moldings, clean lines and detailed millwork. No room shows this balance better than the kitchen. It's incredibly charming, and I love the use of Sherwin Williams' Downy on the cabinets and Calacatta Borghini Extra countertops. These elements bring so much warmth to this inviting space. Instead of canned lights, the kitchen is accented with these beautiful flush mount lights for a more elevated look.
One of my favorite rooms in the house is the scullery. I love the utility of a workspace, sequestered from your entertaining spaces. Kate's is filled with ample storage and style. The cabinets are painted in Mizzle, a soft gray-green by Farrow and Ball.
In our first tour with Kate this summer, she told us she always wants her guests to feel relaxed and happy. That's apparent in each room of her home. The artwork, paneling and rolled-arm silhouettes make this living space feel sophisticated, while the conversational setup and soft layers feel inviting.
Kate's garden is one of our favorite spaces to date, and her planters and obelisks are part of what makes it so special.

See Inside: A Magazine-Worthy Home Designed For Family Living
This Raleigh, North Carolina home was recently featured on the cover of Southern Home Magazine. It's a Master Class in how to design a traditional home that'll grow with your family for years to come.
This Raleigh, North Carolina home was recently featured on the cover of Southern Home Magazine. Garden & Grace is proud to show off a few more photos, thanks to interior designer Katherine Connell and photographer Dustin Peck.
It's a Master Class in how to design a traditional home that'll grow with your family for years to come—brought to life by builder John Sanders, architect Carter Skinner, interior designer Katherine Connell and stylist Kendra Surface. Let's take a look around this unforgettable residence.
The character is evident as soon as you walk in the door. With wide cased arches and openings, a delicately curved staircase and a well-styled entry, it's hard to believe this home hasn't been here for decades already.
The character is evident as soon as you walk in the door. With wide cased arches and openings, a delicately curved staircase and a well-styled entry, it's hard to believe this home hasn't been here for decades already.

The architectural details throughout the home give it so much traditional character. I love seeing that balanced with color, fun hardware and modern comforts like a built-in bar and large, open kitchen. It creates a skillful blend of classic and contemporary.

The dining room is one of my favorite spaces in the house. It really leans into that formality with a classic dining set, mural walls and an elegant, timeless chandelier. It feels like a treasure box.

You see a lot of soothing blues throughout the home, and I like how this living area is a little more unexpected, but you still see the blue through piping and a few accessories. The vintage framed panels and deep, plush salmon couches are truly one-of-a-kind.
Something that really stuck out to me in the Southern Home Magazine feature was how well the design team thought about building around the owner's current needs, while still planning for the future. For example, the bedrooms were all made larger than necessary for a small child—knowing those kids would grow into teens who still call this place home. It's that kind of thoughtfulness that makes hiring the right team so important.
I also really appreciated the attention to detail spent on the curb appeal and outdoor living spaces. In North Carolina we're so lucky that we're able to spend most months outside—and I sure wouldn't mind family dinners out here.

Walk With Us Through Beautiful Charlotte North Carolina
These new builds and renovated homes are just a handful of the many charming homes that grace the winding streets of Birmingham and its surrounding areas.
I was lucky enough to grow up in Charlotte, and while plenty has changed, the tree-lined streets, lush lawns and beautiful examples of classic, Southern architecture continue to make this place feel like home.
Charlotte's oldest neighborhoods are now filled with a mix of original and new builds. I always appreciate when homeowners find ways to maintain their home's original architectural charm.
The patina on this stately brick home makes it feel grounded and elegant all at once.
The facade of this home has been recently refreshed, and we love how timeless the finishes are.
You may have seen this classic Charlotte adobe on the Garden & Grace Instagram a time or two. It always stops me in my tracks. I love the winding sidewalk up the front door.
This painted brick beauty was featured in our August Home Edit—and for good reason. The gentle arch of greenery over one window and slight asymmetry is so charming.
You'll find quite a bit of painted brick in Charlotte—which we love—so there's something refreshing about seeing it exposed here. The Juliet balcony and deep navy front door dress it up just right.
No surprise—I'm totally charmed by the use of green here.
Have you ever seen a sweeter storybook home? The twin clay chimney pots are delightful.
I love a lime wash, especially paired with such classic shutter paint colors.
I love how the glass front door brings a slightly modern touch to this classic brick home. The limestone surround and gas lantern give it a traditional frame.
Looking for more Southern architecture? Stroll through Birmingham, Alabama with us.
